NRMA understands that fuel price is a big concern for motorists and that a majority of our members are also concerned about the environment and climate change.
Cars provide great freedom and convenience in personal transport. They can also generate congestion and other related costs to our health through increased air and noise pollution and to motoring costs through increased travel times and crash rates.
The BITRE (Bureau of Transport and Regional Economics) reported that the social cost of road crashes in 2006 was an estimated $17.85 billion (1.7 per cent of GDP). Pollution from motor transport results in as many premature deaths as occur annually in road accidents with estimated costs at approximately between 1.2 billion and 2.6 billion per year in Australia.
NRMA thinks there are ways we can all reduce these costs and benefit the environment without the need to abandon the car.
