It’s easy to become a little ho hum about 5-star ratings given that most modern cars earn that status with flying colours. It’s easy also to forget just how rigorous that testing is. The excellent Peugeot 508 is the latest offering to achieve that rating under the Euro system.

The strong overall performance is due largely to the inclusion of cutting edge safety systems and the impressive performance of those systems under testing. In each of the main categories – Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Pedestrian Protection and Safety Assist – the Peugeot 508 was impressive.

The 508 obtained the highest Child Occupant Protection score in the category and an excellent 97% rating for Safety Assist. Following on from the award won in October 2010 for the 3008, 5008 and 308, the 508 also won the Euro NCAP Advanced prize for its Premium emergency call system that is referred to in house as Peugeot Connect SOS and is available with WIP Nav as an option.

Peugeot has also announced the availability of the diesel engine we mentioned after the launch drive. The 2.0-litre HDi FAP engine generates 120kW and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Projected fuel consumption is 4.9L/100km for the sedan and 5.0L/100km for the station wagon. Previously, this engine was only available with the 6-speed auto, but the manual option should see frugal buyers in Australia considering it closely.
