Audi joins the compact attack with Q3

Author: Trent NikolicDate: 14 April 2011

Looking to shake up the compact SUV segment of the market, Audi will release the premium Q3 next week in China. We’ve expected it for some time and now we’ll get to see it. Interestingly the entry level Q3 will weigh less than 1500kg, promising strong fuel economy thanks to its light weight. Extensive use of aluminium both structurally and externally contributes to the light weight.

A roomy interior complements the elegant ‘coupe like’ exterior design and there’s clever use of available space to give driver and passenger a feeling of space within the cockpit. Likewise, the rear seats feel roomy for a compact vehicle as well.

Two petrol engines and one diesel engine make up the range choice, with performance as much of a focus as economy. Power outputs range from 103kW to 155kW and the two most powerful engines – the diesel and one petrol – are paired with Quattro AWD and a 7-speed S Tronic gearbox. New for this sector is a system where the gearbox effectively ‘freewheels’ when coasting once the driver has selected ‘efficiency’ mode in the optional drive select system. This feature should have a genuine effect on fuel consumption under everyday driving conditions.

The new Q3 promises to be an exciting and competitive addition to the premium, compact SUV sector and will win fans if it delivers Audi’s signature driving dynamics and feeling of luxury and build quality. It goes on sale in Europe in June and we should see it land Down Under in the first quarter of 2012.
