BMW Z4: More efficient and cheaper, too

BMW Z4: More efficient and cheaper, too

Author: Isaac BoberDate: 7 September 2011

BMW has dropped its middle range six-cylinder powered Z4 roadsters and gone instead for a twin-turbo four-cylinder that saves fuel and sees the price drop below $90k.

BMW is now offering twin-turbocharged four-cylinders (available in two states of tune) in its Z4 range. This is being done, partly to reduce fuel consumption and partly because the new, more efficient engine at 6.7L/100km allows the Z4 to dodge the federal government’s fuel-efficient luxury car tax threshold.

The switch from six-cylinder to turbocharged four-cylinder engine has endowed both the Z4 sDrive28i and the sDrive20i with the combination of remarkable performance and retail price below $90,000.

In order to harmonise prices across the range, BMW has also announced new retail prices for the Z4 sDrive35i ($107,500) and flagship Z4 sDrive35is ($120,500).

In addition to the standard six-speed manual transmission, the Z4 sDrive20i and Z4 sDrive28i will also be available with the new eight-speed Sport Automatic Transmission.

The new BMW Z4 sDrive20i and Z4 sDrive28i will be available in Australian showrooms from November this year, while revised prices for the Z4 sDrive35i and Z4 sDrive35is are effective immediately.

Manufacturer’s Recommended List Prices:

  • Z4 sDrive20i $76,900;

  • Z4 sDrive28i $89,400;

  • Z4 sDrive35i $107,500;

  • Z4 sDrive35is $120,500.
