Hyundai's recent run of quality vehicles and an ever expanding range looks set to continue with the attractive i40 sedan.

We first saw the i40 station wagon at the Geneva show earlier in the year, and now at Barcelona, Hyundai has released the i40 sedan. Hyundai is keen to emphasise the i40's strictly European pedigree, with the attractively styled vehicle being designed and engineered completely in house at Hyundai's R&D headquarters in Russelheim, Germany. Further, Hyundai tells us that the i40 is the next evolution of their unique design language known as 'fluidic sculpture'.

Hyundai has already guaranteed that we will get the i40 wagon in Australia later in 2011, but a decision on the sedan hasn't yet been made. In Europe though, buyers can choose between no less than four Euro V compliant engines – two petrol and two diesel options. There will also be a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.

The environmental story is positive as you'd expect of any new vehicle, but the claimed fuel figures are equally impressive. When combined with the 1.7-litre diesel engine, the inclusion of Hyundai's new Blue Drive technology results in a fuel consumption figure of 4.3L/100km.

It's not all about economy either with extensive standard specifications also on the list for the i40 sedan. Smart-parking assist, lane-keeping assist, as well as Bluetooth with voice recognition, and full map navigation with rear view camera are all standard features. There's an electric parking brake, front air ventilated seats, heated and reclining rear seats as well as auto defrost and a heated steering wheel.

Safety wise, there's also plenty to be impressed with in this segment such as ESP, ABS, Hill Start Assist Control, VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), Brake Assist System and Emergency Stop Signal, which all combine to make the driving experience as safe as possible.

There's also plenty to like about the passive safety inclusions. Every i40 on the road in Europe will be fitted with up to 9 airbags – front, side, curtain and driver's knee airbag available as standard on all models. With inclusions of that nature, Hyundai is also shooting for a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

A decision on whether we will see the i40 sedan Down Under should be made before the end of the year.
