FIRST THOUGHTS: The new Mazda3 looks set to continue the sales success of the previous model, and will see the introduction of the new SKYACTIV model become the country’s most fuel-efficient car.

Mazda Australia today announced the arrival of the new Mazda3, signaling the next chapter in the success story of the country’s best selling small car.

In addition to an updated design, which includes refinements to the front and rear and new alloy wheel designs, the new Mazda3 range also features technical enhancements to improve driving dynamics.

At AIMS in Melbourne, Mazda also confirmed that a new SP20 SKYACTIV model would be added to the new Mazda3 range when it is launched later this year.

The Mazda3 SP20 SKYACTIV will be equipped with the company’s all-new SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine mated to the all-new SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.

When it is launched, the Mazda3 SP20 SKYACTIV, according to Mazda, will become Australia’s most fuel efficient, petrol-powered automatic small car. Using regular unleaded fuel, the new Mazda3 SKYACTIV achieves a high compression ratio of 12.0:1 and delivers 113kW at 6000rpm and 194Nm at 4100rpm.

This equates to an increase in power of approximately five percent and an increase in torque of almost seven percent when compared to the current Mazda3 MZR 2.0-litre engine. In addition, the new Mazda3 SP20 SKYACTIV will be the first Mazda model in Australia to feature i-stop, the company’s stop/start system.

The new Mazda3 SP20 SKYACTIV can be seen on the Mazda stand at the Australian International Motor Show from July 1 – 10. The new Mazda3 range will be available in Mazda showrooms later this year.

Minagi concept hints at new CX-5 SUV

Mazda this morning wowed crowds at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne with the unveiling of two stunning concept cars.

The Shinari and Minagi concepts, making their Australian debuts, are a glimpse into the future of Mazda design.

Both vehicles showcase Mazda’s new design language, KODO: Soul of Motion, and embody key design elements which will be the inspiration for future Mazda production cars.

‘KODO: Soul of Motion describes the ultimate form of motion, it captures the moment just as motion begins, and it stirs the emotions and evokes a will to drive.’

Shinari is a four-door, four-seater sports coupe, which perfectly expresses Mazda’s ‘KODO-Soul of Motion’ design theme and truly embodies the key elements that will take Mazda design into the future.

Inspired by an image of a predator ready to pounce, every element of Shinari is designed to suggest the presence of pent up energy propelling the car forward, giving the feeling that Shinari is a vehicle in perpetual motion.

While Shinari is a pure design concept to express the full potential of KODO design, Minagi gives a glimpse into the next generation of products to come.

The Minagi SUV concept has been designed as the expression of Mazda’s new SKYACTIV technologies and new KODO design language and is the first model to showcase characteristics likely to be seen in the next generation of Mazda cars.

As the second concept car to adopt Mazda’s KODO design theme, Minagi’s design elements combine the expression of energy pulsing throughout the vehicle with the keen agility to move about freely and nimbly. With its upright, compact packaging, Minagi offers a vision of KODO design that is different to Shinari, yet it shares the same sinuous, powerful stance.

Mazda’s unique compact crossover SUV for urban explorers fuses emotional design – which conveys a lively ability to quickly leap into action and head in any direction – with the driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance of SKYACTIV technologies.

Mazda has confirmed that the Minagi concept will form the basis for the design of the all-new CX-5 SUV that will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year and go on sale in 2012.
