The CLS has always been an impressive vehicle and a much loved model among the Mercedes Benz aficionados.
Now, according to the German marquee, this new model will ‘be a whole generation ahead of the competition thanks to exciting design and refined sportiness’.
Two new engines outperform the previous models in both power and efficiency.
The CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY engine delivers 195kW and the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and impressive 225kW. There will also be a CLS 500 model to follow that will churn out a stonking 300kW.
Like much of Mercedes Benz’s current fare, the new CLS utilises a host of clever construction techniques to lighten weight but retain strength and rigidity. It is the first vehicle from Mercedes Benz to have frameless, all aluminium doors. They are some 24kg lighter than a conventional, metal door. A 13 per cent improvement in the drag coefficient makes the CLS a slippery customer, which also assists in keeping fuel usage down.
A new electro mechanical power steering system will retain that traditional Mercedes Benz feel and precision, and new high performance LED headlamps are both powerful and efficient. Active Blind Spot Assist and Active lane Keeping Assist are new to the CLS and ensure the driver of the new CLS is among the safest on the road in terms of mechanical inclusion.
A redesigned front end, indicates this is the new model and it’s an attractive redesign that has enhanced the previous model rather than attempt to reinvent the concept.
It’s a muscular and bold styling statement, something that Mercedes Benz has become renowned for recently.
As you’d expect, the interior is a work of art, and nothing short of exceptional. There’s an elegant, hand crafted feel to the interior finish, with a beautiful cockpit feel for the driver.
We look forward to a test drive in the new CLS when it is available Down Under.
