It’s instantly recognizable as a 1 Series, but this second-generation of the popular hatchback is all-new from bumper to bumper. Longer and wider it now offers more room inside, especially in the back seat, and the boot is bigger too, by 30 litres (now 360 litres).
The engines too have been improved. There are two petrol motors and one diesel (which emits just 115-118g/km CO2 – depending on the tyre package), and all three twin-turbo four-cylinder arrangements (1.6-litres for the petrol 116i and 118i and 2.0-litre for the 118d).
BMW’s EfficientDynamics is standard and this now includes auto Stop/Start across the range. To further improve fuel efficiency there’s an ECO PRO mode which, when activated, adjusts the engine map, heating, air-conditioning, and mirror/seat heating to minimize fuel consumption. The increase in fuel/range is shown on a display on the dash.
BMW is also fitting the 1 Series with an optional eight-speed automatic gearbox which because of its efficiency is able to record lower CO2 and fuel consumption figures than a 1 Series fitted with a six-speed manual.
