The Volkswagen Passat is one of the company’s best selling products, which, according to VW, is down to its diverse range of options. Sold all over the planet, VW has
decided, after the recent introduction of the new Passat CC, to unveil its rough-roader Passat.
Called the Passat Alltrak it’s designed to tap into the growing SUV segment and will likely compete against Subaru’s Outback and even Ford’s Territory AWD.
In comparison with the familiar Passat Estate, the new model is defined by new bumpers, wheel well and side sill flares. A shorter front and rear overhang to improve approach and departure angle, and higher ground clearance will definitely improve the Passat’s chance here in Australia.
In Europe, at least, two petrol engines will be available, as will two turbo-diesel engines. Anyone familiar with VW engines will recognise the 118kW and 155kW donks, and the same goes for the 103kW and 125kW turbo-diesels.
Oddly, the Passat Alltrak will hit the market as a front-driver in both the entry-level petrol and diesel engines, with 4MOTION all-wheel drive an extra-cost option. Stump up for the bigger engined cars and you’ll get 4MOTION and DSG as standard.
Ordinarily, adding all-wheel drive can have a downward affect on fuel consumption, but not in this instance. According to VW both turbo-diesel engines (albeit only one of them is standard with 4MOTION) return 5.7L/100km (103TDI) and 5.8L/100km (125TDI).
We’ll have more information on the Passat Alltrak after its official reveal at the Tokyo Motor Show; we’ll grill VW as to when it will arrive Down Under. And, given how hungry VW Australia is for product, there’s a good chance it will get here, but not before the end of next year (2012).
