Unlike what we’ve come to expect from Subaru, the BRZ will pack more than surprise. The first two are under the skin. It will only be available as RWD and it will be naturally aspirated too, so no turbos to boost performance. The sole engine option will be a direct injection 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine. The codename for this engine is FA. It will allegedly produce less than 300hp. Gearbox options are said to be either six-speed auto or manual.
The BRZ will go into production alongside the much anticipated Toyota FT-86 sibling car and will apparently have the lowest centre of gravity of any RWD sports car on the market. It will also be considerably lighter and smaller in an exterior sense than anything else it will be competing with.
We will see the final styling iteration of the BRZ at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year and it should look similar to the Toyota offering although not exactly the same as you’d expect. We might not see the BRZ go on sale until well into 2012.
