Better yet, it will be on sale here in early January next year, illustrating just how production ready the concept vehicle was. Buyers can choose between a smooth CVT or a 6-speed manual and there’s a new generation Boxer engine. Seven airbags and 17in alloy wheels unique to the model make an attractive buying proposition.

Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, reckons next year will be a big year for the brand in Australia. "The fun-filled Subaru XV will be the first of a number of new Subaru launches in 2012," he said. "It will be a standalone model joining the Forester, Outback and Tribeca in our SUV range".

Subaru is keen to emphasise the fun factor of what an SUV was originally about before it became the family truckster. "Promising outstanding fuel efficiency, the XV will also be a fun-to-drive vehicle – it puts the sports into Sports Utility Vehicle," he says. "Excellent stability, highly responsive handling and exceptional driving dynamics are the hallmark of this vehicle".

The bare numbers look good for the XV as well. "On preliminary figures, our centre of gravity is 39mm lower than a Nissan Dualis and 22mm lower than the Volkswagen Tiguan, and these are key competitors," Nic Senior announced. "Yet despite this the XV has a ground clearance of 220mm. That's 32mm more than the Dualis and 25mm more than the Tiguan, demonstrating the superiority of Subaru's Boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD, and our years of experience in building world class SUVs".

Pricing for the Subaru XV has yet to be announced.
