Tesla electrifies Targa Tasmania!

Author: Trent NikolicDate: 2 May 2011

You wouldn’t necessarily think of electric cars, sports cars or otherwise, and a tarmac rally in the same sentence. That’s set to change though thanks to Tesla’s recent efforts at the Targa Tasmania. The performance of the two Teslas entered was more than impressive given the distances travelled on most stages.

National Sales Manager, Jay McCormack was understandably excited by the performance of the two Teslas. “The ‘Oz Goes Electric Tour’ is going well – however we made a slight detour…..and it was tones of fun!” he told us.

“We have just returned from Targa Tasmania – where we had an awesome time – and we had two vehicles entered. We had one participating in two competitive stages each day and the other in the touring covering every stage and transport. The touring car, mostly on a single charge where internal combustion engines were filling up twice a day – travelled 382km one day on one charge - excellent results for Tesla and electric vehicles in general.”
That wasn’t the end of the story either with the entry of the Tesla in competition prompting organisers to create a new class for the now extremely popular road race.

“We also established a new Class for Targa – the EV Challenge (and won) – allowing for pure electric cars to compete in Targa for the future,” McCormack told us. “We have demonstrated the performance and capabilities of the Roadster in the Event and the organisation can’t wait until next year to have us back in greater numbers with Roadster Owners.”

Pretty exciting time for the Tesla brand Down Under and if you own one yourself, you should already be planning your assault on next year’s Targa Tasmania.
