Tesla Roadster arrives down under

Author: Isaac BoberDate: 14 January 2011

The Tesla Roadster 2.5, the world’s first electric performance car, has finally been approved for use on Australian roads and is available for purchase, starting at $206,188 (plus ORC).

The hand-built all-electric sports car is powered by a liquid-cooled battery pack offering 215kW and 400Nm of instant torque; it’ll hit the legal limit in less than four seconds. The Roadster 2.5 will travel around 360km on a single charge.

The Roadster 2.5 is the fourth iteration of the car in just two years and includes improvements to the interior (it’s now more comfortable) and power control hardware (which ensures performance is the same no matter how hot or cold it is). There is also a cost-optional 18cm touch-screen display with sat-nav and reversing camera.

While Tesla is yet to release information on its distributor in Australia, it has said it will offer all buyers house-call servicing. According to Tesla, its service technicians, the Tesla Rangers, will travel to customers’ homes or workplaces to perform annual inspections, firmware upgrades and other services.

To celebrate the availability of the car down under, Tesla will be displaying the Roadster 2.5 from 9am to 6pm on Saturday, January 15 in First Fleet Park at Circular Quay, Sydney.
