We’ll have to wait until mid year to get behind the wheel, but Holden today took the covers off its tough 2012 Colorado.
Pre production vehicles will be landing soon in Australia for testing and evaluation but we won’t see the actual finished version until mid year. Given the continued popularity of the Holden Colorado, even in the face of more and more stiff competition, means this is an important local release for the brand in Australia.
As you’d expect, Holden will offer three body styles – single cab, space cab and crew cab – while two all new engine variants will be available. Both will be diesel, one a 2.5-litre, the other weighing in at 2.8-litres.
Holden is claiming that the new engines have been tuned to deliver maximum torque nice and early in the rev range, thus maximising driveability and the Colorado’s workhorse standing. The outgoing 3.0-litre diesel has been well and truly trumped with the two new engines delivering 10 and 40 percent more torque respectively.
Importantly for the worksite or country buyers, towing has been high on the priority list and as such, the Colorado will pull an impressive 3.5-tonne load across the range with the larger engine and 3.0-tonnes with the smaller oiler. For the first time in the Colorado range, even as far back as its predecessor Rodeo, no petrol engine will be available.
Holden Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, John Elsworth said the company had been working hard to finalise the local range ahead of the Colorado’s official launch. “The new Colorado is a new era for Holden LCVs and will play a vital role in our product renaissance. We’re so excited about its performance as a tough, daily workhorse and active recreational vehicle that we wanted to preview the range as soon as possible,” Mr Elsworth said.
“This is the most impressive light truck ever designed by General Motors, and we expect it to be a serious challenger in the competitive Australian light commercial market. Our diesel-only powertrain strategy means we’ll offer two very competitive, responsive engines that boast impressive towing capacity of up to 3.5-tonne, which we know our customers will love.”
The new Colorado will be equipped with such standard essentials as Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, power windows, auxiliary input and USB along with two power outlets and an iPod compatible audio system. There’ll be plenty on the standard safety list too, with driver and front passenger airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes with EBD and ESC.
