Utes becoming safer - ANCAP

Utes becoming safer - ANCAP

Author: Daniel StantonDate: 9 February 2012

The utility class has another safer vehicle in its stable after NRMA Motoring & Services and NSW Roads and Maritime Services released a 4-star ANCAP rating for the Nissan Navara.

NRMA vehicle safety expert Jack Haley said the 4-star result for the Nissan Navara 4 cylinder diesel D40 Dual Cab 4x4 meant tradies and fleet buyers now had another safer option in the utility class, however there were still safer models in the market.

“In 2011, we saw the first-ever 5-star utility ratings for the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok and these vehicles now set the bar in this class,” Mr Haley said.

NSW Centre for Road Safety Acting General Manager Marg Prendergast said considerable safety improvements had been introduced by Nissan to increase the level of occupant safety for the Navara.

“This has resulted in a 4-star rating, upgraded from the previous 3-stars for this model,” Ms Prendergast said.

“With many Australian fleets now demanding a minimum safety rating of 4-stars for light commercial vehicles, Nissan is responding to the market in achieving this improved 4-star safety rating.

“However, it is unfortunate that a number of safety features such as electronic brake distribution, side airbags and head protecting side curtain airbags, are not supplied as standard but are only offered as an option.

“We would expect that Nissan continues to improve so their utes will soon all be 5-star rated.”

ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, all Australian state governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
