Protection from serious head injury was good for the driver and acceptable for the passenger in the full frontal crash test.

In the offset crash test there was moderate intrusion into the driver's floor space, which meant poor protection from serious leg injury (based on an offset crash test of a Starlet without airbags - November 1996 NCAP report).

Safety features

Driver and passenger airbags are available as an option for about $1,250. Dual airbags were fitted to the vehicle used in the full frontal crash test. The front seat belts have height-adjustable upper anchorages and the buckles are mounted on the seats. These features improve the fit of the seat belt.

Structure: Acceptable

Full frontal crash test

The passenger compartment held its shape well in the full frontal crash test. All doors remained closed during the crash and could be easily opened after the crash.

Offset crash test (60 km/h)

No offset crash test was conducted but the same structural performance could be expected from the Starlet without airbags and the following is based on that crash test.

The front part of the driver's floor space was pushed rearwards 27cm. The steering column moved rearwards 7cm.

The roof and pillars held their shape well. The driver's doorway shortened by 5cm. All doors remained closed during the crash. A crowbar was required to open the driver's door after the crash.

Full frontal crash test

The driver's head was cushioned by the airbag and protection from serious head injury was good. The passenger's head was also cushioned by an airbag but the airbag appeared to deflate too early, allowing the head to strike the dash through the airbag. Protection from serious head injury for the passenger was acceptable. The driver's knees hit the steering column and dash. The passenger's knees hit the glove box and dash.

Offset crash test (60 km/h)

No offset test was conducted. The leg injury assessments are based on the offset crash test of the Starlet without airbags.

Head Injury Criterion (HIC) is a measure of the potential for head injury. At a HIC of 1000 one in 6 adults will suffer from life-threatening injury to their brain.
