Hyundai Genesis Coupe First Drive

Author: Scott NargarDate: 1 February 2009

NRMA Motoring Researcher Scott Nargar got an exclusive sneak peek at the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe which was on display at last week's Sydney Top Gear Live shows.
This rear-wheel drive 3.8 litre 231kW V6 is new for Hyundai's North American left-hand-drive market and is not due to be officially revealed in Australian until later this month at the Melbourne International Motor show.

In a surprise move by Hyundai, Sydneysiders attending the Top Gear Live shows got an early preview of the new Korean sports car which sat with premium brands such as Ferrari, Maserati and Aston Martin in the foyer of Acer Arena at Homebush.

The Genesis is equipped with Hyundai's latest rear-wheel-drive technology. It has a 3.8 litre, 24 valve V6 engine with dual CVVT (Constantly Variable Valve Timing) backed up with a six-speed close ratio manual gear box and a limited slip differential.

The luxury interior of the Genesis includes leather trimmed sports seats and a sports styled dash/centre console with chromed lower dash facia and interior accents.

The top of the line Track (on display) comes with a premium Brembo® braking system, track tuned sports suspension with strut brace, 19" alloy wheel and a limited slip differential.

The Genesis also has an impressive array of safety equipment that includes Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, advanced dual stage front airbags with Occupant Classification System (which detects whether a child or an adult is sitting in the seat), front side airbags and front side curtain airbags.

Other appointments include proximity key and electronic push button start, HID Xenon headlights, power tilt and slide sun roof, Infinity® premium audio system, Bluetooth® connectivity, power windows, door mirrors and driver's front seat, climate control, cruise control, steering wheel audio controls and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Unfortunately, according to Hyundai, the Genesis Coupe won't be coming to Australia as it's only being produced for the left-hand-drive market. However, it displays the progress Hyundai has made globally with technology and engineering and some of these advances will find their way into future Australian models.

Over the past twenty years Hyundai has grown to be one of the world's strongest automotive producers and with cars like the new Genesis, the recently awarded i30 and soon-to-be-released i30 station wagon and i20, the Hyundai product line in Australia is looking very strong.
