The boys at Trakmaster recommend a large 4WD for hauling around the Tanami, such as a Patrol or a LandCruiser. The smaller versions of the Tanami and other custom-built Trakmaster caravans can be towed comfortably by mid-sized vehicles.
From front to back, this caravan is built tough to handle the varied terrains Australia has to offer. The Sugarglider suspension package is awesome and so is the hot-dip galvanised chassis the thing is built on. Trakmaster use a fibreglass sandwich construction with a few differences and that makes the body just as tough as the chassis. Add to that the extras such as a full fibreglass boot housing twin 9kg gas bottles and a jerry can. There is also a front boot with ABS plastic stone guards either side of the lid.
Other exterior extras include a solar package to power twin batteries housed in a storage locker, a rear bar with twin jerry can holders and a spare tyre, plus a range of storage boots around the body that can be utilised for items such as a generator. Trakmaster has used its caravans in harsh off-road conditions for years and it's this experience that has seen their products improve markedly to the point where they're now quite possibly the toughest dirt-road caravans on the market.
Inside, the Tanami is very bright. Every bit of useable space on the inside has been utilised for storage and comfort, from the L-shaped lounge running across the back wall, to the full ensuite located at the front. I liked the external basin on the front wall which makes grooming easy if the shower or toilet is being used.
The kitchen is to your left as you step into the van and is a popular design with the sink angled into the centre of the van. This allows for a lot of extra storage space without encroaching on living space. The queen-sized bed is island style, positioned between the kitchen and the ensuite, highlighting a clever design that makes excellent use of space.
In all, the interior of the Tanami is great, with a truck-load of accessories and plenty of practical storage space. It's a nifty interior that is very well laid out.
