NRMA Secures Demerit Point Win

NSW Government heeds NRMA's call for points scheme overhaul

NSW motorists have won major reforms to the state’s demerit point system – without sacrificing road safety.

The NSW Government announced the reforms yesterday in response to NRMA calls for changes to the system.

The reforms will allow all unrestricted licence holders to accrue an extra demerit point over three years, while commercial licence holders will receive an extra two. In addition, 22 demerit point offences will either be deleted or reduced.

The overhaul takes into account the huge increase in speed and safety cameras on NSW roads, combined with more police highway patrols.

"Motorists deserve a fair go," said NSW Premier Kristina Keneally. "We've heard community concerns about mobile speed cameras loud and clear and we are responding."

NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin hailed the announcement, calling it a significant win for NRMA Members and all motorists.

"The NRMA took these proposals to the NSW Government because we wanted to see the demerit system made fairer, without sacrificing safety," said Ms Machin. A survey of NRMA Members found that a majority supported increasing the number of demerit points from 12 to 13.

In another gain for motorists, warning signs will be placed 50m in front of mobile speed cameras.

Ms Machin said the decision to give motorists fair warning would reduce community angst about the cameras. "These warning signs will go a long way to building community confidence that these cameras are not about revenue raising but keeping our roads safe."

The vehicles housing the speed cameras will also have to be clearly signposted and marked in bright colours.

Ms Machin thanked the State Government for re-thinking what has long been an unduly onerous penalty system. "Premier Kristina Keneally and Roads Minister David Borger should be congratulated for listening to the concerns of NRMA’s Members and all motorists and introducing these sound measures," she said.
