The Golden West
The first payable gold in Australia was discovered near Orange in 1851 and by the 1870’s the region boasted some of the country’s most productive gold fields. Hill End was among the greatest of Australian goldfields and in its heyday more than 200 companies worked fabulously rich reefs. In 1872 the world’s largest specimen of reef gold at the time – the ‘Holtermann’s Nugget’, weighing 285 kg – was discovered in Hill End. Today Hill End is a living reminder of those golden days and is one of the best preserved goldmining towns in Australia. Most local buildings are managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service as an historic site of national significance.
