Day 1: Kota Kinabalu – Kinabalu Park
Depart Kota Kinabalu and travel two hours along the ridges of the Crocker Range to Kinabalu Park. Enjoy superb mountain views before exploring one of the many trails that lead through the tropical forests.
Day 2: Kinabalu Park & Poring Hot Springs
Travel by road for an hour to Poring Hot Springs at the southern end of Kinabalu Park.Take a short trek into the forest to the canopy walkway for a bird’s eye view of the tropical rainforest.
Day 3: Gomantong Cave – Sukau
Drive four hours overland to the easterly district of Sandakan, passing scenic countryside en-route. Visit the Gomantong Caves where the peculiar edible birds’ nests are harvested annually. Continue to the village of Sukau where the greatest concentration of wildlife in Borneo can be found.
Day 4: Sukau
Explore the region by boat, perhaps viewing species of wildlife, such as macaques, red and silver leaf monkeys, hornbills, and the popular Kinabatangan locals – proboscis monkeys.
Day 5: Sukau – Libaran Island
Drive two and a half hours to Sandakan before taking an hour longboat ride to Libaran Island. Once on the island, choose from a glass bottom boat cruise or snorkelling at the nearby marine islands. In the afternoon, walk to a nearby village and observe a local fisherman’s life.
Day 6: Libaran Island – Turtle Island
Take a boat ride to nearby Turtle Island where the most important turtle breeding marine park of South East Asia is found. Watch green turtles lumber ashore, dig a hole with their flippers and lay around 100 eggs nightly. The rangers transfer eggs to a hatchery for a 50-60 day incubation period before hatchlings escape and scramble to the sea.
Day 7: Turtle Island – Kota Kinabalu
Transfer to the mainland by boat and drive to the famous Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. These semi-wild orang utans may visit the platform provided by the centre for milk and bananas twice a day. Transfer to Sandakan airport for a flight to Kota Kinabalu where your tour concludes.
NOTE: All accommodation is in twin-bedded rooms with en-suite facilities, except Selingan Turtle Island, where bathroom facilities are shared and there is no hot water. The order of the tour is subject to change.
