NZ Panorama Holiday

The Panorama Holiday is a comprehensive New Zealand self drive itinerary which provides a total view of New Zealand, taking in all the significant sights and attractions. In the North Island you will discover beautiful beaches, kauri forests, caves and phenomenal geothermal activity. In the South Island the emphasis is on grand mountain scenery, adventure activities, historic architecture and wildlife encounters. As part of the inclusions you will experience the famous Tranz-Alpine train journey. The TranzAlpine train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, crossing over the fields and farmland of the Canterbury Plains, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. The train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through lush beech rain forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth.

Day Destination 
1 Auckland
Arrive Auckland and collect your rental vehicle. Remainder of your day is at leisure.
2 Auckland
Explore the ‘City of Sails’ on the "Discover Auckland" tour. Highlights include Harbour Bridge, Viaduct Harbour, Mount Eden and optional stop at Kelly Tarltons.

Auckland – Rotorua, via Waitomo Caves (370 km)
Depart Auckland and travel south through the rich Waikato farming region and onto the famous Waitomo Caves. Here you glide by boat through the darkness lit by thousands of tiny glow worms. Continue your journey over the bush-clad Mamaku Ranges and on to Rotorua. Tonight experience an authentic Maori concert and buffet dinner at the famous Tamaki Village.

4 Rotorua
This morning's sightseeing includes Te Puia, the New Zealand Maori Arts and Craft Institute and Whakarewarewa geothermal valley, followed by a leisurely soak in the mineral baths at the Polynesian Spa. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
5 Rotorua – Napier (229 km)
Before departing Rotorua take the Skyline Gondola up Mt Ngongotaha for panoramic views of Rotorua City and Lake Rotorua. Continue along the coastline to Napier which remains the world’s best example of Art Deco architecture and is popular for its wineries. Enjoy a 3 hr Mini Wine Tour in the Napier region, includes return transfers from your hotel.

Napier – Wellington (319 km)
Depart Napier and drive south into the Wairarapa region before reaching Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city.

7 Wellington
Explore the "Coolest Little Capital in the World" Wellington. Visit the famous Te Papa Museum, take the cable car and view the city or just enjoy the great shopping and cafes.

Wellington – Picton – Kaikoura (165 km)
This morning you drop off your rental vehicle and cross the Cook Strait on the Interislander Ferry. On arrival in Picton collect your rental vehicle and continue to Blenheim, the largest town in New Zealand’s best known wine region, Marlborough. Continue on to Kaikoura, famous for whale watching and great seafood.

9 Kaikoura – Christchurch (190 km)
Included in your itinerary is a morning cruise to view the famous Sperm Whales in Kaikoura, before driving south to Christchurch.
10 Christchurch – Fox Glacier (200 km)
Today drop off your rental vehicle and take the famous TranzAlpine Train through Arthurs Pass and onto Greymouth. On arrival pick up another rental vehicle and continue down the rugged West Coast, to Fox Glacier.
11 Fox Glacier – Wanaka (270 km)
This morning enjoy a half day guided walking tour to the lower glacial icefalls of Fox Glacier (transport from Fox Glacier Village is included). After lunch travel south through Haast Pass back over the Southern Alps to the glacial lakes of Hawea and on to Wanaka.

Wanaka – Queenstown (71 km)
Today you have the time to enjoy this extremely picturesque lakeside location. Later in the afternoon travel past Lake Dunstan, through the Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown. This evening enjoy a buffet dinner at the Skyline Restaurant, where you have great views over Queenstown.

Today you are free to explore Queenstown.

Queenstown – Te Anau (186 km)
As you leave Queenstown you will trace the shores of Lake Wakatipu, cross farmland and many rural areas before reaching the town of Te Anau.

Te Anau – Dunedin (286 km)
This morning drive to Milford Sound and join the 11am Milford Sound Cruise. After the cruise depart, via Te Anau and travel past fertile green farmlands through Gore and Balclutha to Dunedin.

Dunedin
This morning tour the Cadbury World Factory. Afternoon is free to explore – Taieri Gorge, Larnach Castle, Natures Wonders or the Monarch Wildlife cruise.

Dunedin – Tekapo (317 km)
Travel up the East Coast to Moeraki, see the unusual boulders that rest on the beach. At Oamaru turn inland to the Mackenzie District and onto Lake Tekapo. Stop for some great scenic photos and see the Church of the Good Shepherd.

18 Tekapo – Christchurch (225 km)
This morning you will have the opportunity to take a scenic fl ight over the glaciers and National Parks. Continue to Christchurch.
