How to avoid breaking down at a COVID-19 testing location

With record numbers of the NSW community coming forward for COVID-19 testing every week, we're seeing many more calls from Members with flat batteries after waiting in line at testing locations.

To help keep things moving safely at your local COVID-19 testing location, follow these tips to avoid a breakdown.

  • NSW Health advice says to allow 30 minutes per test but wait times can blow out so plan ahead and be patient. If the centre is busy, check to see if another clinic is close by.
  • If your fuel gauge is low, fill up prior to entering the COVID-19 testing site.
  • In a normal queue, if you want to listen to the radio or have the fan running while in line, it’s best to keep your engine running to avoid draining the battery.
  • If you are in a long queue and don’t want to leave the engine running but want to use the accessories, turn the engine over every half-hour for 20 minutes to keep your battery charged. If the queue is moving slowly, it’s better to leave the engine running than to keep turning it on and off, as you could drain the battery.

A bit about the test

The COVID-19 test is safe, free and you do not need a Medicare card. The test can be a bit uncomfortable but not painful. A sample of fluid is taken from inside your nose and/or your throat using a medical swab. The swab is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. You need to wear a mask at the clinic and remove it to provide a sample. A doctor or nurse will ask if you have any symptoms. You will normally receive your results within a day or two. By taking the test you are helping prevent the spread of COVID-19.
