Our year 10 to 12 road safety education program

Live. Learn. Drive is our free and interactive 3 year road safety program for students from years 10 to 12. The program addresses the road safety issues they’ll encounter on the road to their independence. Over the 3 years, students will receive content that is relevant to them and build upon this knowledge each year. Live.Learn.Drive aligns with the K-10 Australian Curriculum and NSW syllabuses across PDHPE and Science. It has links to both PDHPE and Physics Preliminary and HSC courses, and is aligned with the Life Ready principles. Detailed information relating to syllabus outcomes can be found below.

Program breakdown

Live

This section of the program is tailored for year 10 students as they transition into adulthood. We begin the discussion on independent travel and adjusting their mindsets towards their personal safety. Students’ workshop strategies on how to remain safe when travelling without their family. Also how to leverage this transition period to better prepare themselves for planning their own travel, managing employment and education, as well as instilling a mindful attitude towards independence.

Learn

This section of the program is tailored for year 11 students. We build on what was covered in year 10 and introduce the notion of comprehensive responsibility as they train to become drivers themselves. Students’ workshop strategies to best utilise the learning to drive process as well as receive advice on how to manage various challenges they will encounter on the road, both within and outside of their control.

Drive

The final section of the program is tailored for year 12 students. We discuss the implications of becoming the designated driver; responsible for not only your own safety but that of your passengers and other road users. Student’ workshop strategies on how they can reduce the road toll for young drivers by debriefing the crash statistics for their demographic and discussing safer driving behaviours that they can adopt. Students also learn about the importance of buying a safe first car and where to find trusted information to help them make an informed decision.

Program delivery

The program is provided free of charge to high schools in NSW and ACT by our expert facilitators who all hold a valid working with children check (WWCC).

The interactive component of the program is enabled by keypad software allowing students to participate throughout the workshop and tailor the direction of the conversation for each specific group.

Program requirements

  • 60 minutes per workshop
  • Minimum group size of 20 students, and a maximum of 50
  • Schools must book a minimum of 2 workshops per visit
  • Adequate AV equipment to support a PowerPoint presentation (i.e. smart board, projector or screen and speakers)
  • Active teacher supervision for the duration of each workshop
  • Onsite parking for the presenter
  • Post program online evaluation surveys to be completed by all students and attending teachers

Program booking

The program is offered throughout the school year in the Sydney, Illawarra, Central Coast, Hunter Valley, Newcastle and ACT regions, with regional tour dates to be announced in due course. Student Survey

Each student that participates in the program is eligible to enter a draw to be in with a chance to win their choice of; 3x NRMA driving lessons or a $200 gift card.
