The NRMA will help drive tourism and open the roads of the South Coast to electric vehicle drivers with the installation of a fast charging station at Batemans Bay.

The fast charger will allow most EV motorists to charge their cars in about 30 minutes. Standard public EV chargers take between three and six hours, and traditional power outlets can take more than 12 hours.

The station has been installed in the car park at the Batemans Bay Visitor’s Centre, drawing motorists into the centre of town and allowing them to use local amenities while charging.

The Batemans Bay charging station is the 15th of the NRMA’s electric vehicle fast charging stations to open to the public across the state, following Sydney Olympic Park, Wallsend near Newcastle, Jindabyne, Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley, Mittagong in the Southern Highlands, Narrandera, Berry, Young, West Wyalong, Bathurst, Parkes, Dubbo, Nabiac and Tamworth.

The NRMA has committed $10 million to build one of Australia’s largest fast charging networks across NSW and the ACT.

NRMA Chief Investment Officer Rachel Wiseman said the Batemans Bay charger would be a game changer for electric vehicle motorists travelling along the South Coast.

“The stunning South Coast of NSW has long been a favourite destination for the motoring tourist, and we want to enhance that by making it even more accessible for all road users,” Ms Wiseman said.

“Coastal communities really thrive when tourism thrives, and the great Aussie road trip is changing.

“We know that one of the key reasons why the uptake of electric vehicle ownership has been relatively slow in Australia is because motorists are worried about where their next charge will be, particularly outside of capital cities,” Ms Wiseman said.

“The NRMA is committed to delivering a solution to ‘range anxiety’, by installing an extensive network of electric vehicle fast chargers right across NSW and the ACT. Our aim is that 95 per cent of EV journeys are within 150 kilometres of one of our charging stations.”

Ms Wiseman said today’s opening would activate the NRMA’s connected route in the region, following the opening of a station in Berry, and ahead of the opening of another station in Bega.

The charging station further enhances the NRMA’s commitment to tourism on the South Coast, joining SIXT at Bateman’s Bay and NRMA Murramarang Beachfront Holiday Resort to its stable of local tourism offerings.

Eurobodalla Council’s sustainability coordinator Mark Shorter said an increase in the number of charging stations along the state would encourage more EV drivers to the region.

“Drivers will be able to stop for a 30-minute recharge. That’s time for some shopping and coffee in the CBD. So it’s good for electric vehicle drivers and good for local business,” Mr Shorter said.
