NRMA releases Rate Your Road survey for the Illawarra

19 March 2019

Roads across the Illawarra have featured prominently in the NRMA’s Rate Your Road election survey, which saw 23,400 people take part across the state – making it the state’s largest ever transport survey.

The survey was conducted to give the local community a say about road congestion and safety in the lead up to the March election. Participants were asked to rate their roads on a scale out of 100 based on safety, congestion and current condition.

Almost 740 people used Rate Your Road to have their say on local roads, including:

- Wollongong (525)
- Shellharbour (214)

The Princes Highway received the second largest number of votes for an individual highway (720) after the Pacific Highway, including over 100 votes at Albion Park Rail alone. The highway received an overall rating from the public of 49/100 with congestion identified as the biggest concern.

Pleasingly, Memorial Drive in Wollongong was listed in the top three roads to receive the highest rating, after receiving an overall rating of 59/100 and 72/100 for the condition of the road.

Local roads to receive votes included:

- Princes Highway rating of 56/100
- Memorial Drive rating of 59/100
- Lawrence Hargrave Drive rating of 50/100

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury thanked the local community for taking the time to respond to the record-breaking NRMA Rate Your Road survey in the lead up to this week’s NSW Election.

"Last year, the NRMA released a comprehensive report in to the transport future of the Illawarra - Rate your Road complements the findings of this report and provides a grass-roots assessment of how local roads are performing," Mr Khoury said.

"Most telling is the strong response, again, to congestion around Albion Park Rail. The NRMA has no doubt that this issue will fall off the list once the bypass is complete. These survey results will prove invaluable to the NRMA over the next term of government at both the state and federal level."

Across NSW the roads to receive the highest number of votes were:
