Historic Shepparton is a simple two hour drive from Melbourne, and the city boasts a winning mix of urban facilities and natural beauty. The holiday park is located inside the sprawling Victoria Park and is an easy 10 minute walk from the city centre. It’s also within metres of both the Goulburn River and Victoria Park Lake. With abundant birdlife and great fishing on your doorstep, plus water and bush views from many of the camp’s sites and cabins, it’s an ideal destination for outdoorsy types. Kids will love it, too. Next door to the park, you’ll find Aquamoves, an indoor/outdoor swimming centre and water park, plus a skate park and playground.
Spacious powered and unpowered sites are scattered throughout the holiday park – some by the water’s edge – and are pet friendly. Campers can opt for access to a shared amenities block or an ensuite on site. Those who’d prefer to stay in a cabin can choose from several configurations, including deluxe cabins, which sleep up to five, family deluxe cabins, which sleep up to six, and extra large lakeview ensuite cabins, which also sleep up to six. All cabins come equipped with air conditioning, TVs and full kitchens with microwaves, and the larger cabins are also stocked with handy appliances, such as DVD players and hairdryers.
Shepparton has evolved from its 19th century beginnings as a sheep station and river crossing into a busy, multicultural farming and manufacturing centre, as well as a cultural hub. The impressive Shepparton Art Museum, which underwent a major renovation in 2012, is just a few blocks north of the holiday park and is the perfect place to get your bearings. In addition to exhibiting a range of local artists, the museum hosts regular events and holiday programs, and serves as a meeting point for the local community. From the gallery, it’s a quick walk to some excellent places to eat and drink, including the cool cafe and produce purveyor Fryers Street Food Store and classy Sebastians. If you’re still hungry, jump in the car and visit some of the farms and wineries nearby. Families mustn’t miss KidsTown, run by fruit company SPC (it’s widely recognised as Australia’s best adventure playground) and car enthusiasts will love Shepparton Motor Museum, which has more than 100 rare vehicles in its permanent collection and an array of temporary exhibits that are always changing.
