The hotel is right near the traditional heart of Sydney’s business district, Martin Place, as well as major shopping streets Pitt and George.

A smaller hotel with minimal bells and whistles, it nevertheless offers good value in a location convenient for Sydney attractions, and the reception is open 24 hours.

The hotel 

Boasting an attractive atrium/courtyard with an artwork featuring steel birds in flight, the Travelodge Hotel Sydney Martin Place is a boutique sized hotel around the corner from Martin Place in Phillip Street. A recent renovation saw an upgrade of the common areas, and the result is understated chic. The hotel offers 24 hour reception assistance and friendly advice about the city. As well as being near the city’s top shopping spots, the location is close to the serenity of Hyde Park with its fountains, statues and the Pool of Reflection (part of the ANZAC memorial). Parking is off site, but Martin Place train station is your handy gateway to Bondi Beach and the rest of Sydney.

The rooms 

The hotel’s 86 rooms are stylishly simple, offering practical features for business travellers such as work desks and wifi. In room photographic art pays tribute to the historic buildings of Martin Place. There’s no eatery on the premises, but with plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby, good food isn’t hard to find – and you can have it delivered. Plus, there’s a kitchenette and tea and coffee making facilities in your room. 

The neighbourhood

The business heart of Sydney, Martin Placeis a pedestrian mall featuring historic buildings and high end shopping. The Mintand the Hyde Park Barracks Museum both date back to the early 19th century and offer glimpses into life in the early years of the colony. The State Library of NSW always has a fascinating exhibition on, while the green sanctuaries of the Domain and the Royal Botanic Garden are just east of the library. The Art Gallery of NSW is a must visit, with a terrific permanent collection and major touring art shows. Good places to eat near the hotel include hip and happening Frankie’s Pizza, David Thompson’s Thai inspired Long Chim and European style bistroAsh St Cellar. For a nightcap, the cunningly hidden bar The Baxter Inn specialises in whisky cocktails. Many of the major Sydney attractions, including Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and The Rocks, are a 10 to 15 minute walk from Martin Place – so if you’ve got a busy itinerary, the location is hard to beat.
