Brett Bishop - 30 years of help

Local NRMA Patrol Brett Bishop is celebrating 30 years of service on the road helping to keep his community moving.

A workshop mechanic from the age of 16, Brett joined the NRMA in 1989 after his best mate’s dad, an NRMA hero, encouraged him to apply.

Though home was south west, Brett was quick to learn every back street of Central Sydney and spent a lot of time fighting off party goers in Kings Cross who mistook him for a taxi.

Brett still remembers being nervous on his few first jobs around the city but was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception he always received on arrival for broken down Members.

“People are always happy and appreciative to see me. It’s one of the many perks of the job. It’s so satisfying to be able to help people in their time of need,” Mr Bishop said.

There is no typical day for Brett, one minute he could be helping with a mechanical breakdown the next he’s rescuing kids or pets locked in vehicles.

“I’ve lost count of how many kids and pets I’ve saved from locked cars. They are always the jobs that stick in my mind because the parents are so distressed. It’s always a relief when I can ease their fears and get their child or pet out quickly,” Brett said.

A keen motorbike rider, Brett believes regularly riding with his buddies keeps him young.

The 57 year old father of two has looked back at his 30 year career with the NRMA with great pride and said he was looking forward to many more years on the road.

“I love the feeling of being part of something that people really admire, we are one of the few organisations that is still held in very high regard within the community,” Brett said.

NRMA Executive General Manager Motoring, Nell Payne, said over the past 30 years Brett had continued to demonstrate what an asset he was to the organisation and the almost 50,000 community members he has responded to on the side of the road.

“Brett is a highly skilled and knowledgeable patrol who always goes above and beyond for Members with countless commendations over his 30 year career. His excellent mechanical skills and outstanding customer service make him a firm favourite amongst our Members,” Ms Payne said.

“Brett always works to the highest of standards and Members just love his caring, friendly and kind nature. He is a highly treasured member of the NRMA family and we are lucky to have him celebrating this significant milestone with us.”
