Weekly Fuel report - 13th of January 2020

  • Average regular unleaded prices in Sydney should range between 166 cents per litre (at the high point of the new cycle) and 136 cents per litre (at the low point of the new cycle).
  • Average regular unleaded prices were stable while diesel prices rose 0.7 cents per litre this past week.
  • Crude oil prices are expected to rise this week given current tensions in the Middle East. Tapis crude rose $US 1.80 per barrel and Mogas 95 rose $ US 2.40 per barrel last Friday on commodity markets, after a US air strike killed a top Iranian military commander. The increase in tensions between the US and Iran is raising concerns of disruptions to oil supplies from the Middle East.

    Over the previous week:

    * The average crude oil price rose 0.5 cents per litre; and
    * Sydney’s Terminal Gate Price for regular unleaded decreased 0.7 cents per litre to 134.4 cents per litre.

    Sydney prices

    Sydney’s last price cycle lasted 19 days, 10 days shorter than previous cycle. Today is day 25 of the current price cycle, with the average price for regular unleaded fuel in Sydney at 136.7 cents per litre (Monday morning).

    The most expensive point of the current cycle was Friday 13 December at 166.2 cents per litre for regular unleaded petrol. The highest prices for E10, Premium 95 and Premium 98 were 164.9, 183.5 and 188.8 cents per litre respectively.

    Looking ahead

    Over the past week, the average Mogas price fell 1.7 cents per litre with the Australian dollar rising 0.2 cents to 69.7 cents against the US dollar. Average unleaded prices have fallen to the bottom of the cycle in the Sydney market and are now expected to spike to 166 cents per litre over the next week.

    Average regular unleaded prices in Sydney should range between 166 cents per litre (at the high point of the new cycle) and 136 cents per litre (at the low point of the new cycle).

    The average price ranges for E10, Premium 95 and Premium 98 should be as follows:

    E10 – a high point of 164 cents per litre and a low point of 134 cents per litre.
    Premium 95 – a high point of 182 cents per litre and a low point of 152 cents per litre.
    Premium 98 – a high point of 188 cents per litre and a low point of 158 cents per litre.

    Sydney’s current average diesel price is 149.7 cents per litre – up 0.8 cents per litre this past week.

    The current average LPG price in Sydney is 78.5 cents per litre – up 1.2 cents per litre this past week.
