YWCA of Canberra will use a $3,850 NRMA Safer Driving School Community Safety Grant for an ACT Walking School Bus program to teach young school children road safety skills while walking to and from school.
NRMA Director Alan Evans will follow one of the 19 Walking School Bus routes in the ACT to Aranda Primary School tomorrow from 8:30am with Program Manager Tiffany Henderson to present the grant and discuss the program. Mr Evans will walk the route that picks up children along the way to school.
Mr Evans said the ACT Walking School Bus program was an important safety initiative that taught vital road safety skills and kept kids fit at the same time.
"Each week close to 200 children use the Walking School Bus which uses trained volunteers to walk children to and from school," Mr Evans said.
"The Walking School Bus increases kids' awareness of cars and other pedestrians and reduces the number of accidents on local roads.
"YWCA of Canberra is to be thanked for bringing the community together for this important road safety initiative."
Walking School Bus Program Manager Tiffany Henderson said 15 Primary Schools in Canberra participated in the Walking School Bus program and thanked the NRMA for their support.
"The program involves the entire community with 53 trained volunteers following a set route each morning and afternoon," Ms Henderson said.
"There are currently 19 routes mapped out which are walked 34 times a week.
"The NRMA grant will be used to provide participating schools with a Walking School Bus banner to let parents and the community know of the available safe transport option for their children."
NRMA Safer Driving School Community Grants help communities develop solutions to local road safety problems. This year NRMA has awarded $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 24 community groups and councils throughout NSW and the ACT.
