NRMA Motoring & Services has welcomed the Australian Government's announcement of the installation of boom gates and other safety measures at 45 high-risk rail crossings throughout NSW.
NRMA Director Graham Blight said the NRMA supported the Australian Government's Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program and the injection of $42.7 million to improve safety at the 45 high-risk crossings.
"Across Australia there are more than 100 crashes at rail crossings every year which could be prevented if boom gates, flashing lights and bells were installed," Mr Blight said.
"The 45 rail crossings to be upgraded in NSW currently only have a stop or give way sign to warn motorists to take care.
"We welcome the upgrades to high-risk rail crossings because they significantly reduce the likelihood of a crash.
"However motorists need to take special care at all rail crossings, especially those without boom gates and safety lights.
"Crashes between trains and cars are particularly severe with often tragic consequences.
"More boom gates, bells and lights at NSW rail crossings means needless accidents will be prevented and lives will be saved.
"Motorists and truck drivers crossing at these locations in future will have a safer journey."
