Throughout 2008, 250 farming families across NSW enjoyed a break at one of the NRMA's five Holiday Parks as part of a joint initiative with the NSW Farmers' Association to aid drought-stricken families.
NRMA Director and Chairman of NRMA Holiday Parks, Graham Blight said the feedback from the families who took the free, five-night holiday at the Park of their choice was extremely positive.
"The NRMA wanted to help farming families who had been doing it tough because of the state’s harsh drought conditions," Mr Blight said.
"Many families came back from the break delighted to have had the chance to spend some quality time with each other without the daily challenges of farm life intruding.
"It was the first time many of these families had taken a holiday in years and for some of the children, it was the first time they had seen the ocean."
The successful families, chosen from nearly 350 applications, were able to take their holiday at one of the following five NRMA Holiday Parks in 2008:
Mr Blight said applications came from many towns and districts across the state including the Parsons family from Forbes who holidayed at Darlington Beach Holiday Park.
Mr Andrew Parsons said the entire family had an unbelievable holiday and hoped to be able to give back to someone else in need once the drought breaks.
"Our two children Samantha (8) and David (7) were really impressed with the three days of continuous rain we had while we were on holiday," Mr Parsons said.
"They had never seen rain like this and they were so excited to play outside."
The Helping Farming Families program was one way the NRMA showed its support for families struggling with the drought in 2008. The NRMA will continue to support a range of community initiatives and events in 2009.
