These are the first official pics of the new MINI Coupé the most dynamic MINI yet.

First thoughts: Despite the odd looks and the fact the interior and driving position hasn't really changed, this might just be the most exciting driver-oriented MINI yet.

Based off the Cabriolet's floor structure, rather than the hatch, the Coupé thus has all of the extra bracing in the oversized sills and box-section stiffening between the rear wheel housings, and a fixed bulkhead behind the front seats. This means it's got the tightest body of any current MINI. It's also about 20kg heavier than a hatch.

The removal of the back seats means the Coupé has the most boot space, at 280L, of any MINI model, bar the Countryman. And to improve head room, in the new roof section (29mm lower than a hatchback's roof), the headlining has cutouts in it, and there's a large hatchback, which MINI is describing as being inspired by GTs of yore.

There are two spoilers on the rear of the car: a fixed spoiler on the trailing edge of the roof and a flip-up spoiler (designed to reduce lift over the rear wheels) that rises up out of the tail at 80km/h.

As mentioned in our last piece, the MINI Coupé is powered by the most powerful of MINI engines. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard for all Coupés and a six-speed automatic is optional on all but the JCW.
