10. Is it safe to repair a chipped windscreen?
Provided the chip can be repaired, then yes it is safe. After your windscreen is repaired, it will be restored to full structural strength and you will be able to drive the car immediately. Only a faint mark at the point of impact should be left.

NRMA AutoGlass has a repair before replace policy, as repairs are cost effective, time efficient and environmentally friendly. All our fitters are accredited and annually assessed by our national training team in accordance with Australian and New Zealand standards AS/NZS 2366: Part 1 & 2:1999.

11. Is it safe to drive with a stone chip or crack?
Modern windscreens are made with laminated glass which comprises of two layers held together by a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayer.

Typically when a windscreen is damaged, only the outer layer of glass is broken. The car will usually be safe to drive unless the damage is severe. (Refer to figure 1.1)

However, if the windscreen chip is not repaired, it may get worse and spread. This usually happens when the car is driven, due to vibration or when temperature changes occur. After your windscreen is repaired, it will be restored to full structural strength and you'll be able to drive the car immediately. With the optical and cosmetic appearance of the windscreen dramatically improved (a faint mark at the point of impact will still be visible), it will appear like new.

12. Will my windscreen damage get worse?
The damage may spread as the car is driven, due to vibration or when temperature changes occur.

In time if left unrepaired, moisture and debris will penetrate the stone chip. This will contaminate the interlayer and turn white. It is best to have stone chips repaired as soon as possible after the damage has occurred. Call NRMA AutoGlass on 13 11 22 to book a repair service.

13. Does NRMA AutoGlass replace rear and side glass?
Yes, NRMA AutoGlass offers a replacement service. Unlike the windscreen, both the rear and side glass comprise only one layer and therefore cannot be repaired but must be replaced instead.

14. What materials do NRMA AutoGlass use?
NRMA AutoGlass use only quality glass, with all our stock being sourced from reputable Australian suppliers. Our glass meets the requirements of Australian Design Rule ADR 8/01 and complies with Australian Standard AS/NZS2080:2006.

15. Is there a cheaper auto glass repair or replacement option?
If you determine that your windscreen needs to be replaced, remember - you get what you pay for. The lowest possible price should not be a primary consideration when having a windscreen replaced. Instead, look for a top-quality professional installation that will maintain the structural integrity and other safety features built into your vehicle at the factory. NRMA AutoGlass offers a quality service at a competitive price with an additional 20 per cent off the RRP for NRMA Members.

16. Can I install a windscreen myself?
The windscreen of your vehicle is a safety device, like air bags and seat belts. Besides its obvious role of protecting occupants from wind, water and debris, the windscreen can help save your life, and the lives of your passengers, by ensuring you are not thrown from the vehicle in a collision. Windscreens also play a critical role in front passenger airbag deployment on many cars. And, the windscreen (and rear window) helps support the roof of the vehicle in a rollover so you and your passengers will not be crushed.

NRMA recommends that you have a fully qualified glass repairer replace your windscreen, using quality material and offering a warranty on the glass service.
