Secure and Connected Vehicles

Secure and connected vehicles

Stronger data, privacy and cyber rules in Australia.

Connected vehicles can improve safety, mobility and convenience, but they also collect and share large amounts of personal and vehicle data. As cars become more connected, stronger privacy protections, cyber security standards and consumer safeguards are needed to ensure Australians can benefit from these technologies with confidence.

Key findings

1
69% lack understanding of vehicle data
Connected vehicle owners do not understand how their vehicle data is collected and used.
2
84% would avoid a brand after a cyber incident
A major cyber security incident would influence future brand choice.
3
95% identify connected vehicle risks
NRMA members are concerned about vehicle hacking and personal data being sold or shared without consent.

Why this matters

Connected vehicles are transforming the way Australians travel, offering safer, smarter and more convenient journeys. But they are also collecting unprecedented amounts of personal and vehicle data. Many motorists do not know what information is being collected, where it is stored or how it is being used.

The NRMA supports innovation, but Australians deserve clear privacy rights, stronger cyber security protections and greater control over their vehicle data. It's time for rules that give motorists the same confidence in connected technology as they have in the vehicles themselves.

What the NRMA is calling for

star
Strengthen privacy protections
Give motorists greater transparency and control over how connected vehicle data is collected, used and shared.
bulb
National cyber security standards
Introduce nationally consistent cyber security and data protection standards for connected vehicles.
Incident reporting and consumer protections
Establish automotive cyber incident reporting, recall pathways and clear consumer remedies when digital failures occur.
