The average price of regular unleaded in Sydney today is 198.0 cents per litre – the highest of all capital cities across Australia and the 6th highest location in NSW. Prices are now falling less than one cent per litre per day in Sydney.

Diesel prices across Australia remain stubbornly high despite the wholesale price of diesel now falling to be in line with regular unleaded at 176 cents per litre. The average price of diesel in Sydney is 194.4 cents per litre, representing an over 18 cent per litre gross margin.

Petrol prices in Australia have been uncharacteristically stable throughout 2023 with the wholesale price for regular unleaded hovering between 169 cents per litre and 175 cents per litre since January.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury said petrol prices in Sydney would now continue its slow fall throughout Easter and into the ANZAC Day long weekend.

“Sydney is living in petrol purgatory this year with prices having fallen below the record highs of last year yet not nearly enough to deliver meaningful relief to families – as we have seen across the city this week with averages again breaching $2 per litre at the high-point of the cycle,” Mr Khoury said.

“Meanwhile diesel prices across Australia remain too high despite Gasoil prices falling as much as $US 80 a barrel to the current price of $100 a barrel. Almost 40 per cent of Australia’s consumer fuel market is diesel so it is totally unacceptable that these prices remain so high for so long.”

With the gap between the cheapest and most expensive service stations in Sydney currently 47 cents per litre, the NRMA is encouraging motorists to shop around before filling up. Families taking a road trip are likely to find cheaper prices outside Sydney.

“Sydney prices are still very high and will fall very slowly into the ANZAC Day long weekend, so please get on the My NRMA app before you fill up and if you’re heading away track your journey on the app – you’re likely to find a bargain outside Sydney,” Mr Khoury said.

Current average prices for regular unleaded in cents per litre across Australia are:

Sydney  198.0  Falling slowly
Adelaide 186.8 Falling
Brisbane 178.8 Rising
Canberra 186.3 Stable
Darwin 179.1 Stable
Hobart 188.3 Stable

Perth 173.4 Cheapest today
