The average price of regular unleaded in Sydney is currently 178.2 cents per litre. The average price for diesel is 192.3 cents per litre.

Sydney’s wholesale prices have risen 5.5 cents per litre for regular unleaded over the last week to 172.5 cents per litre. Diesel wholesale price is currently 180.7 cents per litre.

The Sydney price cycle, which began falling just before Christmas, and fell to only 176 cents per litre. By contrast, the corresponding cycles in Adelaide and Perth fell to the mid-160 cents per litre.

Perth is currently at the bottom of its price cycle and is six cents per litre cheaper than Sydney. With prices expected to spike in the coming days Sydney motorists have again been short-changed by the city’s price cycle.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury urged motorists to fill up now before petrol prices rose just as families prepared to go away for the Australia Day long weekend.

“Unfortunately, we are seeing prices start to creep up in the Sydney market much sooner than expected,” Mr Khoury said.

“The price at the bottom of the cycle in Sydney bottomed out at around 10 cents per litre higher than Adelaide and Perth, meaning Sydney has continued its 2023 trend of paying more for petrol than some of its smaller capital city counterparts.

“The increase in the wholesale price is due to a number of factors including the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the falling Australian dollar. These factors continue to have a disproportionate impact on the eastern capital cities fuel market.

“There is currently a massive 60.6 cent difference between the most expensive and cheapest prices in Sydney, so please jump on the My NRMA app to find the best price before filling up because that represents a $33.30 saving on a tank of petrol.”

Australia’s capital city prices for regular unleaded are:

  • Adelaide 199.1 cents per litre and rising
  • Brisbane 209.9 and falling
  • Canberra 186.4 and slowly rising
  • Darwin 182.8 and stable
  • Hobart 182.8 and slowly rising
  • Melbourne 177.5 and rising
  • Sydney 178.2 and rising
  • Perth 172 and falling
