SHINE - LGBTQI and Ally group

At the NRMA, we take pride in being a company that supports people for who they are, no matter how they identify.
SHINE Pride Patrol

Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and everyone deserves to feel they belong.

SHINE is the NRMA's LGBTQ+ employee network, bringing together employees and allies to foster connection, support and understanding. Through connection, education and advocacy, we foster a culture where individuality is celebrated, allies are welcomed, and everyone feels valued for who they are.

Our progress

Tracking our ongoing journey towards a more inclusive, equitable, and empowered workplace — where LGBTQ+ employees feel seen, supported, and celebrated for who they are.

We honour the history, culture and ongoing contributions of LGBTQI+ communities. By recognising days of significance and hosting awareness events, we create space for storytelling, celebration and reflection - helping build a stronger, more connected workplace.

How we drive impact:

We recognise LGBTQI+ days of significance through internal events, videos and articles that celebrate community, raise awareness and share lived experiences.
We host educational sessions and guest speakers, including Lunch n Learns with organisations such as the 78ers, to deepen understanding and encourage meaningful conversations.
We use our internal and external platforms to raise visibility, celebrate LGBTQI+ communities and demonstrate our commitment to inclusion throughout the year.

We’re committed to embedding LGBTQI+ inclusion into the foundation of our workplace policies and benefits. From anti-discrimination protections to gender affirmation leave, we ensure our systems support the needs and experiences of LGBTQI+ employees and their families.

How we drive impact:

All our policies are inclusive of LGBTQI+ employees and their families, and include specific examples and avenues of support (e.g. Anti-Discrimination Harassment Bullying and EEO Policy, Domestic & Family Violence Policy, Travel Policy).
We have introduced gender affirmation leave policies for transitioning employees.
We implemented confidential contacts and compiled a list of national and state-based support services relevant to LGBTQI+ people, their families and friends.
The NRMA partnered with TELUS Health to provide employees and their families with around-the-clock wellbeing and safety support.

Creating a safe, welcoming environment means rethinking everyday workplace practices. We’ve made meaningful updates - from how we collect employee information to our dress code and facilities - to better reflect and support gender diversity and self-expression.

How we drive impact:

We updated the SIXT uniform policy to remove gendered language.
Our NRMA Group-wide dress code empowers all employees, including trans, gender diverse, and non-binary people, to dress in ways that reflect their identity.
Gender fields in personal information have been updated to “Gender Identity” with inclusive options: Female, Male, Non-Binary / Gender Diverse, Prefer not to say.
We’ve introduced all-gender bathrooms to provide a more inclusive option for trans and gender diverse employees and guests.

Visibility matters. We provide our people with tools and opportunities to show their allyship and deepen their understanding of LGBTQI+ inclusion. Through SHINE, our employee-led network, we foster a culture of support, learning and advocacy across the business.

How we drive impact:

We actively encourage employees to visibly express their allyship, including through pronoun-inclusive email signatures, pride lanyards, and Teams backgrounds for LGBTQI+ days of significance.
SHINE is included in our corporate orientation, helping new starters feel welcome from day one.
SHINE promotes allyship through training events and guides focused on trans and gender diverse inclusion.
We’ve made face-to-face LGBTQI+ awareness, inclusion, and ally training available to all employees since 2019.
We have a visible and active Executive Sponsor for LGBTQI+ inclusion who advocates at the highest level of the organisation.
