Family fun: Taronga Zoo Sydney

With its large assortment of species (up to 350 at last count), there's plenty of opportunity to interact with the locals, including the elephants, giraffes, koalas and zebras. Other highlights include the Free-Flight Bird Show and live Seal Show, and taking in scenic views from Sydney's only Sky Safari cable car – watch the elephant herd play from above or try to spot the squirrel monkeys as they climb and leap around their home.

How to get there: Your Taronga Zoo adventure begins before you've stepped your foot in. Take a ferry from Circular Quay, where on arrival (and departure) you'll board the Sky Safari cable car, where you can soak n the magnificent Harbour views as you're whisked to the zoo.
