On 26 September 2018, the NRMA achieved a major milestone of 250,000 students educated as part of the Science & road safety program. Since the program commenced in February 2014 we have visited 600 schools across NSW and the ACT, engaged with 10,000 teachers and collected data from 60,000 students that demonstrates the effectiveness of the program in increasing children’s knowledge and driving changes in their on road behaviour.

Roads are places of potential risk for children and more so for those with hearing and vision loss. To address this we visited the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) to educate their students and to celebrate this important milestone.

For several months we worked closely with teachers at RIDBC to redesign the program to meet the needs of their students. The program included student and teacher education resources and interactive road safety shows designed to empower children with the strategies they need to stay safe on the road.

RIDBC is a charity and Australia’s largest non-government provider of education, therapy and cochlear implant services for children and adults with vision or hearing loss. They also provide learning opportunities to the professionals working in this space.

Each year, more than 8,000 people benefit from their hearing and vision services. Early intervention is critical and one of the services RIDBC is working to provide is hearing assessments for children in remote NSW so they can live a life unlimited.
