The Australian outback is a place like no other: stress-free, full of big skies, contrasting landscapes and vibrant colours.

For many Aussies young and old, a lap of our big brown land with a caravan in tow is bucket list-worthy and arguably the best way to experience the country’s diverse landscapes and characters.

Caravan adventures can be logistically challenging though, and the remoteness of outback Australia means there will be situations where you will invariably be hours’ away from your nearest petrol station or town at one point or another.

However, with some forward planning and insight, you can hit the road knowing you’ve got everything you need, both for daily duties and the unexpected.

What do you need to take on a caravan holiday?

What you take on a caravan holiday will largely depend on where you’re going, and who you’re travelling with.

Along with the usual family road trip essentials – a comprehensive list of which you can read here - it is imperative that your car and caravan are well equipped for the adventure too.

These items include sunscreen, insect repellent, umbrella and rain jackets, hats, reusable water bottles and wet ones/baby wipes, towels and pillows, bedding, stubby coolers, games and sporting equipment, bikes and picnic blanket.

If your trip is likely to take in off-road or remote travels, astute travellers recommend the following items on-board:

  • A hand-held GPS system
  • A generator
  • Portable solar panels
  • Portable BBQ (such as Weber)
  • Portable fridge
  • Jumper cables
  • A door step (if caravan clearance is high)
  • Solar awning lights
  • Durable camping table and chairs
  • Rubbish bags (or a spare wheel bag)
  • Clothesline and pegs
  • A sturdy tarpauline
  • Torches and spare batteries
  • Comprehensive first aid kit
  • Portable mobile phone power packs
  • A decent supply of water
  • Jerry cans and spare fuel

Along with the essentials, it is important to ensure that your tow vehicle is in correct running order too. Australia’s varying conditions and long stretches of open road and corrugated tracks will test even the most well-maintained vehicle. Our six-point guide on preparing your road trip vehicle is a terrific place to start.

What are the top caravan essentials on a trip away?

Along with essentials for the family, it is important to keep in mind the best equipment for your caravan.

These include:

  • Wheel chocks
  • Pads to place under the drop jacks
  • A comprehensive tool kit
  • Cable ties
  • WD40
  • Awning straps
  • Power leads and extension cords
  • Spare tyres for both van and vehicle
  • Gloves for mechanical work
  • Tyre pressure kit and portable pump/12V inflation unit
  • Couple lock
  • Ample gas and water

If you’re travelling in winter, consider a small firepit and an axe to chop wood, or even hot chocolate and marshmallows. For summer adventures, the hammock and beach ball are always a treat.
