The lock-up-and-leave lifestyle

The lock-up-and-leave lifestyle: why more Australians are choosing it for retirement

Why lock-up-and-leave living is changing the way Australians think about retirement. We spoke with the team at Keyton about why the shift is gaining momentum.

Spring rarely waits for the calendar. You feel it first: the chill gone from the air, the birds chirping a little earlier, jacaranda blossoms decorating the pavement or your car!

And with it comes new energy: thoughts of the places you'd like to visit, the people you'd like to see more of and the things you want to do.

Then the to-do list catches up with you. For many homeowners, the house that once felt like a sanctuary can feel more like a job, with another gutter to clear or another weekend spent on upkeep instead of the freedom spring signalled.

It's why a growing number of Australians are rethinking what retirement living looks like by choosing a lock-up-and-leave lifestyle in retirement communities.

We spoke with the team at Keyton, which operates more than 65 retirement villages along Australia's east coast, about why the shift is gaining momentum and what residents say has changed for them.

More time to pursue passions

The pitch behind lock-up-and-leave living is about freeing up residents’ time and energy to pursue personal passions and life plans. Without weekends lost to gutters, gardens or spring repairs, there’s more time for the things that tend to slide down the list during a working life: travel, family, hobbies that got shelved.

There's also a practical aspect to it. A property that's maintained and secure while residents are away – grounds kept, staff on site – removes one of the main hesitations people have about travelling from home for an extended stretch.

Today's retirees are busier than ever

The idea of retirement as “slowing down” doesn't hold up the way it used to. Many residents in Keyton communities are travelling, volunteering, minding grandchildren, picking up new hobbies or still working part-time.

That's the appeal of lock-up-and-leave: it frees up time for a coastal escape, a lap of regional Australia in the caravan, or an extended stay with family knowing that the home is looked after.

A community you can feel over coffee

One of the most natural ways to get a sense of village life is over a coffee. Across many Keyton villages, on-site cafés and dining spaces have become the natural meeting point for residents, visitors and family, offering a real sense of the day-to-day connection that defines the community.

In NSW, that might be the Blue Gum Café at Dee Why Gardens, Muimui's at Brentwood Village, the Blue Gum Café at Glenaeon, or Brookside Restaurant at Ardency Aroona. In Victoria, it's the cafés at Waverley Country Club, Abervale or Classic Residences Brighton. In Queensland, there's Rumours Café at Buderim Gardens and Serenity Corner Cafe at Bernborough Ascot.

That sense of connection is backed by residents themselves. In Keyton’s 2025 Resident Survey, more than 7,100 residents responded, with 90% saying they felt positive about community spirit and belonging in their village. It suggests the everyday coffee, conversation and familiar faces are what helps village life feel connected and welcoming.

If you're weighing up a move like this, spending an afternoon in one of these communities will tell you more than any brochure will.

Independence, without the upkeep

The villages are designed around a simple idea: everyday living should be easier, not smaller. The homes are thoughtfully planned, with welcoming shared spaces that offer as much or as little community involvement as residents want. Keyton’s goal is to offer residents less maintenance and less worry, without any compromise on independence.

So, what would you choose?

Next time that first hint of spring hits, it's worth asking: if you had more time and fewer responsibilities to manage, what would you choose to do?

For many Keyton residents, the biggest surprise isn’t how much they gained by making the move, it’s wishing they’d done it sooner. Because the freedom, connection and peace of mind they’re looking for isn’t something to put off for another season.
