Another Chinese manufacturer is readying its bid in Australia’s highly competitive ute segment , with details of the new Foton Tunland hybrid ute released today.

The four-model Foton Tunland ute range has been slated for Australian arrival around September, with pricing opening at $39,990 plus on-road costs for the V7-C 4x2 – a value-driven variant aimed at fleets and trades.

A 4x4 version of the V7-C is pegged at $42,990 plus on-road costs, adding four-wheel drive, a rear diff lock, additional drive modes and “enhanced versatility”, according to the manufacturer.

Stepping up higher into the model mix is the more lifestyle-oriented V9-L 4x4, which opens at $45,990 plus on-road costs and takes on a multi-link rear suspension system for improved ride comfort.

Finally, the Foton Tunland line-up tops out at $49,990 plus on-road costs in Australia for the V9-S 4x4, which distinguishes itself thanks to front and rear diff locks, a panoramic sunroof and niceties including

All variants of the Foton Tunland source power from a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that outputs 120kW at 3600rpm and 450Nm between 1500-2400rpm. A 48-volt hybrid system is fitted to every grade but will bring negligible benefits in terms of fuel consumption - if the comparable Toyota HiLux mild-hybrid range is any guide . An eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is also fit standard.

All models score a 14.6-inch infotainment screen as standard, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, LED headlights and tail lights, plus a comprehensive safety and driver assist suite.

In off-road terms, Foton claims a 700mm water wading depth, minimum ground clearance of 240mm, plus approach and departure angles of 28 degrees and 26 degrees respectively, while a 3.5-tonne towing capacity and circa one-tonne payload across the class matches class expectations.

Foton makes no apologies for the styling inspiration behind either model, with its uncanny resemblance to the RAM 1500 and Ford F-150.

The Tunland will land in Australia backed by a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty. Foton says it now has a dealer presence in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the ACT.
