2026 Nissan Micra resurrected as an EV

Pint-sized city runabout returns to market with up to 408km electric range but will it come to Australia?

Nissan’s cutesy micro-car, the Micra, has been reborn as an electric vehicle with three trim options and a range of up to 408km.

The petrol-powered Micra was a staple in the Nissan stable for many years, but declining demand for micro-cars in Australia saw it discontinued here in 2016.

On May 21, Nissan unveiled a sixth-generation Micra with familiar bug-eyed styling but powered by either a 40kWh or 52kWh battery pack for 90kW-110kW of power and a claimed range of 310km-408km.

Claimed charging time is 15-80 per cent in 30 minutes when hooked up to a fast charger, with the new Micra offering either 80kW or 100kW charging speeds depending on the variant. The Micra also features vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, meaning it can power electrical devices such as speakers, air pumps and vacuum cleaners.

There are four drive modes – comfort, sport, eco and ‘perso’ – the latter allowing the driver to choose his or her preferred driving dynamics.

The Micra will be offered in three variants, with 18-inch alloy wheels, six colour options, two roof options, and three interior trim choices. So far it has only been confirmed for Europe, where it will go on sale in late 2025, with Nissan Australia confirming to Open Road it has no plans for an Aussie launch at this stage.

It remains very much a metro car, measuring under four metres long and 1.8 metres wide, with 326 litres of boot space and weighing between 1400kg and 1526kg. It also bristles with safety technology, ticking off every imaginable active safety acronym.'

The cabin will have all the modern accoutrements, including 48 colour options for the ambient lighting, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a Harman Kardon audio system, and Google’s map and voice assistant apps built in.

Nissan has long been at the forefront of the electric car movement, launching its first small electric hatchback, the Leaf, in 2010 and more recently creating e-Power (a variation of a hybrid powertrain) versions of its Qashqai and X-Trail SUVs.
