Starting your journey as a driver is an exciting milestone, but the thought of getting behind the wheel of your own vehicle can also be a little daunting.
Learning from an expert will help you build your confidence. This is where NRMA Driver Training comes in. Available in Sydney and other parts of NSW including Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wagga Wagga and the Illawarra, these sessions are designed to help you gain confidence and master the rules of the road safely.

The NRMA has been offering driving lessons since 2005 and now has one of the largest networks of instructors in NSW.
Each lesson is based on a 40-point curriculum, which is a more in-depth version of the standard 20-point framework used by many other providers. Your training will be tailored to your current stage in the learning process, whether you’re a complete beginner or have already logged some hours with a parent or supervising driver.
The goal isn’t just to help you pass your test. Your qualified driving instructor will focus on building safe driving habits as well as helping you to understand the rules of the road.
And, unlike some providers that push students to book your driving test quickly, your driving instructor won’t recommend you sit the test until you’re 100 per cent ready.
Before you can get behind the wheel and start lessons with NRMA Driver Training, you’ll need to get your learner's permit through Service NSW.
This includes passing the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and applying for your L Plates, which you can do once you turn 16.
Once you’re set up, you can book your first NRMA driving lesson online (or a family member may wish to buy vouchers for you).
You’ll have to log 120 hours of driving before you can sit the test, but you’ll be able to log three hours of driving experience, for every one hour of a structured lesson with a licensed driving instructor. You can do this for up to 10 lessons, totalling 30 bonus hours.
Your instructor will meet you at home, school or another agreed location. Your first session will start with a short assessment to understand your current skill level, followed by a drive in a quiet area suited to beginners.
For first-time drivers, instructors recommend a 90-minute session to give you enough time to cover vehicle controls, ensure your seat and mirrors are in the right place and understand basic skills before you take the wheel.
All lessons are delivered in dual-control vehicles, so your instructor can press the brakes if needed. They’ll explain each skill clearly and use a progress card to track your development so that each lesson can build on what you have already learned and mastered.
It’s a good idea to practice with a parent or supervising driver between driving lessons, ideally twice a week if possible. The instructor’s role is to teach you skills, and practicing helps reinforce what you’ve learned.
Lessons follow a proven learning pathway, focusing on safety-first topics including hazard perception, observation checks, merging, navigating your way through roundabouts and freeway driving. Skills like parallel parking are introduced later in the program, once you've mastered vehicle control.
Each student is assessed against three levels of competency — dependent, competent and independent.Your instructor will guide you, as you move through each stage.
Choose a person you trust and try to practice in different conditions including the rain, at night and in busy traffic (once you feel confident doing so). This will help you feel more confident as a driver.
Want to feel even more assured? Once you have logged 50 hours of actual driving (not 3-for-1 lessons), you can enrol for a NSW Safer Drivers Course. This will earn you 20 hours of logbook credit while developing your ability to identify hazards on the road, understanding how to reduce crash risks and developing low risk driving techniques.
Once your instructor is confident you’re test-ready, you’ll be able to book your driving test through Service NSW.
If you don’t own or have access to a car, or if you want to take your test in a vehicle you’re comfortable driving, consider booking a 2.5 hour package where your NRMA Driver Training instructor will pick you up, take you for a lesson then drop you to Service NSW for your test. You can use the instructor’s vehicle to take your test, while your instructor waits for you. Whether you pass or have to try again in the future, your instructor will drive you home afterwards. This package depends on availability, so book ahead once you know the date of your test.
Your driving instructor has no influence over whether or not you pass the test on the day. They can only help you be as prepared as possible. If you don’t manage to pass, they can help you to understand what went wrong and practice, so you get it next time.
We also offers refresher lessons for senior drivers aged 85 and over, who are required to complete a driving assessment. Whether it was requested by their medical practitioner, or as per the NSW licencing requirements, when you reach 85 years of age.
Seniors have the option to take their assessment with us instead of Service NSW, with the benefit of more personal support and feedback if they don’t pass the first time.
Instructors can come to your home and conduct the assessment in your own vehicle, provided it’s comprehensively insured. Many of our members choose this route because of their long-standing relationship with the organisation.
For learners planning to book several sessions, becoming a member with us can offer immediate value. Members pay only $891, instead of $990 for a 10-hour lesson package. On-members can still purchase discounted lesson bundles, through the NRMA.
