A new look sharpens up Audi’s popular compact SUV.

What is it?

Launched back in 2012, Audi’s Q3 compact SUV quickly became one of its most popular models and, after stocks of the old model ran out earlier than expected in 2019, the all-new second generation aims to recapture that success.

How much is it?

Initially it will just be the 35 TFSI ($46,400) and Launch Edition ($52,750) available, as more models arrive later in the year. The new styling reflects Audi’s current design philosophy, with a more prominent grille, side air intakes and sharper crease lines over the wheel arches distinguishing the new Q3 from its softer-shaped predecessor. It’s also larger overall, especially the wheelbase, opening up the interior and increasing luggage space.

What's it like inside?

Audi’s fresh interior styling is showcased in a more chiselled dash and centre console. The sharp lines continue through to the doors, which have inverted blade-style handles that take some getting used to.

What's it like to drive?

While the 1.4-litre turbo engine’s output isn’t groundbreaking, its redeeming feature is maximum torque starting at just 1500rpm. Weighing in at 1450kg, however, it has a weight penalty of almost 100kg over the similar spec A3, and acceleration when overtaking doesn’t feel all that enthusiastic.

The six-speed DCT is one of the better ones around, although it still has the annoying shuffle and hesitation when you first move off. We couldn’t match the claimed combined fuel figure, returning 7.7L/100km on our highway drive loop and 10.9L/km around town.

Final thoughts

There’s a lot to like about the new Q3. It has an edgy look, the interior detailing is first class and standard features, such as the virtual dash, are welcome additions. The base engine isn’t very exciting, but neither are those in the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA. For many buyers, the extra interior space, practical rear seats and cargo volume will be of greater importance.
