General questions

We were first introduced to GIVIT when we both were helping with the clean-up of flood-ravaged NSW Northern Rivers communities. They host a unique online platform connecting the generosity of Australians like you with support groups, grassroots charities, and local governments. All the organisations they work with – currently over 4,500 across the country – are genuinely working to help people, communities and causes in need.

The great thing about this partnership is in the many ways you can personally make a difference. Right now, you can search for current volunteering opportunities, or offer to donate your time and unique skills either on the ground or remotely. Just download or update to the latest version of the My NRMA app, head to the Community tab and tap Get involved.

And volunteering is just the beginning. We’re working together to open up more ways for you to help out through the donation of household goods and necessities, money and vouchers, and to give you the ability to share your thoughts on how we can better support the causes you care about.

If you’re ready to offer your time and skills to a worthy cause, you can get started right away on the my nrma app. Simply download or update to the latest version of the app on your phone or tablet, head to the Community tab and then tap on Get involved. From there you can take a look at current volunteering opportunities, or leave some details to offer your time and skills to causes and groups that are a good fit for you.

Many organisations post their current volunteering opportunities, which you can search by location, type of cause and more, to find those you might be interested in. Alternatively, you can leave some details about yourself on the volunteering database – such as your availability, skills, experience and the areas you’re able to get to – and then organisations can respond to you with opportunities to suit.

GIVIT has a strict and thorough vetting process for all charities and organisations they work with. They approve registrations only from verified government and not-for-profit organisations working directly with communities and groups who may be marginalised, vulnerable, impoverished or impacted by things such as natural disasters.

You’ll soon find options to donate goods or money directly from the My NRMA app. In the meantime, you can do this via the GIVIT website, where 100% of publicly donated money is used to purchase essential items and services for those that need them, with no administration fees or other deductions.

Applying for volunteering opportunities

You should get an email from GIVIT within 24 hours of your application with confirmation that it’s been received and contact details for the charity or organisation you’ve applied to work with. If you haven’t got this email, it’s a good idea to first check your junk mail folder, otherwise your application may not have been received. Once it is received, It can often take a few business days for the organisation to get in touch, but after this time you can contact them directly using the details provided in your email.

There are several reasons why an application might be declined, and it should be explained in an email or other communications from the charity or organisation. Oftentimes it’s simply because the need has already been met, but it may also be that they’ve had trouble getting in contact with you or there’ve been more suitable applications. But don’t be disheartened, the perfect opportunity for you is likely right around the corner.
